Lufthansa Miles & More: Status Tiers and Loyalty Benefits

Lufthansa's Miles & More has the most layered elite status structure in Star Alliance and the only programme with a publicly recognised top tier whose benefits include a dedicated terminal building. HON Circle, at the top, is invitation-only and famously hard to reach.

The status tiers

TierStatus miles or points (annual)Star Alliance equivalent
Frequent Traveller35,000 status miles or 30 segmentsSilver
Senator100,000 status miles or 50 segmentsGold
HON Circle600,000 HON Circle Points (2 years)Gold (top tier)

What each tier unlocks

Frequent Traveller grants priority check-in, priority boarding, increased baggage and a 25% mileage bonus.

Senator opens Star Alliance Gold benefits worldwide (Lufthansa Business Lounge access, BA Galleries when flying OneWorld), priority security at most German airports, free seat selection, and the Senator Lounge at Frankfurt and Munich (a tier above the Business Lounge).

HON Circle grants the Lufthansa First Class Terminal at Frankfurt (a separate building with chauffeur transfer to the aircraft), the First Class Lounge worldwide, guaranteed Business class availability with reasonable notice, and a level of personal service that's hard to find elsewhere.

The First Class Terminal at Frankfurt

Lufthansa First passengers and HON Circle members can use the First Class Terminal: a separate building with its own security, dedicated agents, full restaurant, bar, and cigar lounge. From there, a Porsche or Mercedes drives you across the tarmac directly to the aircraft door. No other airline operates anything comparable.

Family and household

Miles & More allows mile transfers between family members for a fee but does not offer formal pooling. HON Circle members can nominate a partner for Senator-level benefits.

The quirky benefit

HON Circle Points only count for paid premium-cabin Lufthansa flying (and select group flying), which keeps the tier vanishingly small relative to other top airline statuses. Lufthansa does not publish member numbers, but the lived experience among holders is that operational priority is unusually strong because the cohort being prioritised is genuinely tiny.

The honest take

Earning Miles & More status from the UK is difficult without consistent paid Lufthansa or Swiss Business travel. For UK collectors the programme's primary value is the Lufthansa First Class booking exception (see the Lufthansa workflow), not the status side. Senator is achievable for frequent Lufthansa Business travellers; HON Circle is essentially a Frankfurt-resident pursuit.
