Lufthansa Miles & More: The Optimised UK Workflow

Miles & More is the loyalty programme of Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian and Brussels Airlines. For UK collectors it is, for most purposes, the wrong choice: Miles & More passes carrier-imposed surcharges on partner awards, which makes Aeroplan, LifeMiles and United better default options for the same physical seat. There is one significant exception, and the exception is the entire reason to bother.

Who this is for

Anyone who specifically wants to fly Lufthansa First Class. That is essentially the whole answer. For other Star Alliance partner redemptions, see the Aeroplan, LifeMiles or United workflows.

The Lufthansa First Class exception

Lufthansa releases the bulk of its First Class award space inside 14 days of departure, and almost all of that space opens to Miles & More members BEFORE other Star Alliance partners can see it. If you want a reliable path to flying Lufthansa First Class, an active Miles & More balance is the price of admission.

How to build a Miles & More balance from the UK

  • HSBC Premier Reward Points. Transfer to Miles & More at 1:1, but only for HSBC Premier account holders.
  • Lufthansa, Swiss or Austrian flights. Direct earning if you fly the carriers.
  • Buy miles in promotion. Miles & More periodically sells miles at ~1.5-2 US cents each. Worth the maths only against a confirmed Lufthansa First booking.
  • Marriott Bonvoy transfer. 3 Bonvoy to 1 Miles & More mile, with bonus.

There is no UK-issued Miles & More credit card. Amex MR does not transfer to the programme from the UK.

Award search

Miles & More's own website (miles-and-more.com) is the only search that sees Lufthansa First Class availability before T-14 days. United's website and Seats.aero are useful cross-references for everything else.

How to book

Online booking works for most Lufthansa-operated awards. Lufthansa First Class typically opens online within hours of availability appearing in inventory. Partner awards sometimes need a phone call to the Miles & More service centre.

Sweet-spot redemptions

  • LHR-FRA-LAX in Lufthansa First. 130,000 Miles & More miles plus around £700-900 cash. The signature redemption.
  • LHR-FRA-HKG in Lufthansa First. 170,000 miles for a long-haul First trip to Asia.
  • LHR-FRA-anywhere in Lufthansa Business. 125,000 miles transatlantic; technically achievable but other programmes do this cheaper.
  • Short-haul Europe in Business. 30,000 miles within Europe; useful only for top-up bookings.

Common mistakes

  • Booking Star Alliance partner Business through Miles & More when Aeroplan, LifeMiles or United would price the same seat with hundreds of pounds less cash.
  • Targeting Lufthansa First Class without date flexibility. Space opens unpredictably inside 14 days; if you can't move dates by a few days, you'll struggle.
  • Letting miles expire. Miles & More miles expire 36 months after they're earned unless you have status or use a Miles & More credit card (UK-issued cards exist but are uncompetitive).

The optimised workflow

  1. Open a free Miles & More account only if Lufthansa First is on your target list.
  2. Build a balance via HSBC Premier transfers or a miles sale.
  3. Wait until 14 days before your flexible target date.
  4. Check miles-and-more.com First Class availability every few hours; LHR-FRA short-hauls plus FRA-Anywhere long-haul.
  5. The moment Saver space appears, book online. It can disappear within hours.
  6. Confirm seat assignment in the First cabin (typically rows 1-2 on the A380, plus one row on 747-8).
