Alaska Mileage Plan: Status Tiers and Loyalty Benefits

Alaska Airlines joined OneWorld in 2021. Mileage Plan status is earned through Elite Qualifying Miles flown across Alaska and OneWorld partners. For UK collectors the practical interest is the alliance status it grants, plus the decent-value Alaska Lounge network if you transit US west coast airports.

The status tiers

MVP20,000Ruby
MVP Gold40,000Sapphire
MVP Gold 75K75,000Sapphire (with extras)
MVP Gold 100K100,000Emerald

What each tier unlocks

MVP grants priority check-in, priority security at participating US airports, free same-day flight changes and a modest mileage bonus on Alaska flights.

MVP Gold unlocks OneWorld Sapphire (so BA Galleries access worldwide), free complimentary upgrades on US Alaska flights when available, and four guest passes for Alaska Lounge.

MVP Gold 75K adds 50,000 bonus Mileage Plan miles (a "bank bonus" delivered at status earn), eight guest passes, and an additional gift of status to one nominated person.

MVP Gold 100K grants OneWorld Emerald (BA Concorde Room access), four "Magic" upgrade certificates, the highest tier of priority service, and a complimentary Alaska Lounge membership.

Alaska Lounge access in detail

Alaska Lounges are at most US west coast airports plus a few further east. They're solid rather than spectacular: clean food and drink, generous seating, dependable Wi-Fi. The Seattle and San Francisco lounges have particularly good views. Worth knowing about if your transatlantic Avios trip connects through these airports.

Family and household

Mileage Plan has no formal Household Account. Mile transfers are possible between members but capped per year.

The quirky benefit

Mileage Plan members get a guaranteed companion fare via the Alaska co-brand credit card (US members only) and four annual systemwide upgrade certificates at MVP Gold 100K, valid on long-haul partner Business at fixed pricing. The latter is one of the more underappreciated OneWorld Emerald benefits in the world.

The honest take

Alaska status is genuinely hard for UK members to earn without dedicated US travel, since the Elite Qualifying Miles must be on Alaska metal or specific OneWorld partners with rate restrictions. For most UK collectors, Mileage Plan is purely a redemption currency reached via Marriott Bonvoy transfers; the status side belongs to people who live in California or the Pacific Northwest.
