Alaska Mileage Plan: The Optimised UK Workflow

Alaska Airlines joined OneWorld in 2021, bringing a US-focused but globally useful Mileage Plan programme into the alliance. For UK collectors, the standout feature is a published partner chart with strong pricing on JAL, Cathay and Qatar premium cabins, paired with very low cash co-pays.

Who this is for

Marriott Bonvoy hoarders looking for an alternative to AAdvantage, anyone targeting JAL First Class to Tokyo or Cathay First to Hong Kong, and OneWorld flyers who want fixed-chart pricing with low surcharges as an alternative to BA Avios.

How to build an Alaska Mileage Plan balance from the UK

  • Marriott Bonvoy transfer. 3 Bonvoy points to 1 Alaska mile, with a 5,000-mile bonus per 60,000 Bonvoy transferred. The primary UK earning route.
  • Bilt Rewards. Niche unless you have a US presence.
  • Paid Alaska or OneWorld partner flights. Direct earning.
  • Buy miles in promotion. Alaska runs occasional sales pricing miles at ~2 US cents each.

Award search

alaskaair.com handles partner award search reasonably well. For Cathay specifically, cross-check with cathaypacific.com. For JAL, ExpertFlyer is the gold standard for finding premium cabin space. Alaska's search occasionally shows partner space the partner's own site does not, and vice versa.

How to book

Online booking works for single-carrier partner awards. Most multi-partner OneWorld itineraries need a phone call to the Alaska service centre, which is reasonably knowledgeable on partner pricing.

Sweet-spot redemptions

  • LHR-Anywhere on JAL Business or First. 70-100,000 Alaska miles depending on destination. JAL First Class via Alaska is one of the historically generous redemptions of the loyalty world.
  • LHR-HKG-Anywhere on Cathay Business or First. 50-70,000 Alaska miles for the LHR-HKG leg in Business; First in similar range.
  • LHR-DOH on Qatar QSuite. 50,000 Alaska miles one-way for Qatar Business via Alaska. Compare to BA Avios with surcharges.
  • LHR-MAD-USA on Iberia. 30,000 Alaska miles one-way Economy or 60,000 Business via the Iberia Madrid hub.

Common mistakes

  • Forgetting that Alaska devalues sporadically. Premium cabin partner pricing has crept up over recent years.
  • Transferring Bonvoy speculatively. Alaska miles can be hard to use once the specific redemption you wanted disappears.
  • Calling the service centre without confirmed availability on the partner's own website. Agents read from Alaska's system, which sometimes lags partner availability.
  • Missing the stopover rule. Alaska allows a free stopover on one-way awards on certain partners; a quirky feature worth knowing about.

The optimised workflow

  1. Open a free Alaska Mileage Plan account.
  2. Build a Marriott Bonvoy balance through the UK Marriott Amex card and stays.
  3. Identify the target OneWorld trip 6-9 months out. JAL First needs the most lead time.
  4. Confirm partner availability on the partner's own website AND on alaskaair.com.
  5. Transfer Bonvoy in 60,000-point chunks for the bonus (allow 5-7 business days).
  6. Book online for single-carrier awards; call Alaska service for partner itineraries.
  7. Consider a stopover at the partner hub city for a multi-destination trip on one award.
