Air Canada Aeroplan: Status Tiers and Loyalty Benefits

Aeroplan is widely loved for its redemption side (no fuel surcharges, free stopovers, partner-friendly rules). The status side runs in parallel as Air Canada's "Aeroplan Elite Status", earned through Status Qualifying Miles or flight segments.

The status tiers

TierSQM (annual)Star Alliance equivalent
25K25,000Silver
35K35,000Silver
50K50,000Gold
75K75,000Gold (with extras)
Super Elite100,000Gold (top tier)

What each tier unlocks

25K grants priority check-in, priority boarding and small Status Qualifying Mile bonuses.

50K is the prize threshold: Star Alliance Gold (so lounge access on Lufthansa, Swiss, Singapore, ANA), Maple Leaf Lounge access on Air Canada itineraries, eUpgrade certificates, priority everything.

Super Elite adds Air Canada Signature Suite access at Toronto Pearson (one of the better airline suites globally), eight eUpgrade certificates, and the highest tier of customer service.

Maple Leaf Lounge access

Maple Leaf Lounges are the Air Canada lounges, primarily at Canadian airports and a few key US/UK stations. Heathrow T2 has a Maple Leaf Lounge for Air Canada departures; 50K and above get access on Air Canada flights regardless of cabin.

eUpgrade certificates

Aeroplan's eUpgrade system lets status members request upgrades on Air Canada paid fares using certificate credits. 50K gets enough credits for a few long-haul upgrades per year; Super Elite gets more. The upgrades clear based on availability with priority by status tier.

Family and household

Aeroplan supports a Family Sharing feature: up to eight family members can pool Aeroplan points. Status itself doesn't pool but points do, similar to BA's Household Account.

The quirky benefit

Aeroplan status tiers count Status Qualifying Flights as an alternative path: 50K can be earned through 50 segments rather than 50,000 miles. For UK members who fly many short Star Alliance segments, the segment path can be faster.

The honest take

UK members rarely earn Aeroplan status because reaching 50K through Air Canada and partners isn't economical from Britain. Aeroplan's lasting value to UK collectors is the redemption side (see the Aeroplan workflow). That said, the Family Sharing feature is a real upside if you're already pooling Aeroplan points across a household for a planned long-haul trip.
