Aer Lingus AerClub: The Optimised UK Workflow

Aer Lingus AerClub is the loyalty programme of Ireland's national carrier, and uses Avios. For UK collectors it unlocks the single best non-positioning trick in the Avios family: transatlantic Business via Dublin with no fuel surcharges. Same Avios currency as BA, dramatically lower cash co-pay, only a Dublin connection in the way.

Who this is for

Anyone with an Avios balance who's flying to the US east coast or Chicago and doesn't want the BA cash bill. Anyone willing to add a connection through Dublin in exchange for a few hundred pounds saved per ticket. Families travelling with luggage who'd benefit from US pre-clearance at Dublin.

How to build an AerClub Avios balance

  • Use your BA Executive Club Avios. AerClub redemptions on Aer Lingus metal are bookable through ba.com using a BA Executive Club account; no separate transfer needed.
  • Direct AerClub earning. Credit any paid Aer Lingus flight to AerClub.
  • Amex Membership Rewards. Transfers 1:1 to AerClub directly if you want to keep balances separate.

Award search

Search on ba.com using the Use Avios search; Aer Lingus operated segments appear in connecting results from London to US destinations. The AerClub website (aerclub.aerlingus.com) sometimes shows additional availability for AerClub-direct bookings.

How to book

Most LHR-DUB-USA itineraries can be priced and booked on ba.com as a single Avios redemption. If the calculator on ba.com refuses to combine the segments, search the legs separately on ba.com and call the BA Executive Club desk to combine them into a single ticket with stopover (small booking fee applies).

Sweet-spot redemptions

  • LHR-DUB-JFK in Business. 62,500 Avios one-way plus around £180 cash. The BA direct equivalent runs 50,000 Avios plus £1,000.
  • LHR-DUB-BOS in Business. 62,500 Avios with similar low cash component.
  • LHR-DUB-ORD in Business. Same band; Chicago by a different connection.
  • LHR-DUB short-haul. 4,000 Avios + £1 each way off-peak. Stand-alone Dublin weekend trip on the same Avios.

Common mistakes

  • Booking just the LHR-DUB leg and the DUB-USA leg on entirely separate tickets when the website will combine them as a single Avios redemption.
  • Cutting the Dublin connection tight in winter; weather delays at Dublin are common and your long-haul will not wait.
  • Forgetting US Customs and Border Protection Pre-Clearance happens at Dublin; allow time at DUB but reap the reward at JFK / BOS arrivals.
  • Treating Aer Lingus Business as equivalent to BA Club Suite. The hard product is competent, not aspirational.

The optimised workflow

  1. Open a free AerClub account (you can do this in two minutes).
  2. Confirm your BA Executive Club Avios balance covers the redemption (62,500 per person one-way for Business transatlantic).
  3. Search ba.com Use Avios for your target dates with origin LHR and destination JFK, BOS or ORD. Filter for connecting routes via DUB.
  4. Book the combined itinerary on ba.com. If it won't price, call BA Executive Club with both leg numbers ready.
  5. Build a 3-hour minimum buffer at Dublin, ideally more in winter.
  6. At Dublin, complete US Pre-Clearance after the AerLingus-side connection but before boarding the long-haul.
  7. Arrive at your US destination as a domestic passenger; clear baggage in minutes.
