Hotel and Airline Status Matching from the UK

Earning elite status from scratch can take years of paid travel. Status matching, presenting proof of status from one programme and being granted equivalent status elsewhere; is the closest thing in loyalty to a free lunch. For UK travellers it's surprisingly underused.

How status matches work

You send a hotel or airline programme proof of your current status with a competitor (typically a screenshot of your account, a member card image, and recent activity). They grant you matched status, usually for 90 days, with a challenge to complete a specified number of stays or qualifying nights to extend it to a full year.

Hotel matches worth pursuing

Marriott Bonvoy

Marriott runs a Status Match Challenge for members holding elite status with Hilton, Hyatt, IHG, Wyndham or Accor. Apply via the Marriott support page; you typically receive an instant Platinum match for 90 days, and 16 paid nights within those 90 days converts it to a full year of Platinum.

Hilton Honors

Hilton operates a less formal but reliable match programme via email to the Hilton Honors team. Holders of Marriott Platinum or Hyatt Globalist routinely receive Hilton Diamond status for 90 days, retainable with a stay challenge. The match is most readily granted when you have an upcoming Hilton booking.

World of Hyatt

Hyatt offers a Globalist Challenge via concierge request: typically four months of trial Globalist status, retainable by completing 20 qualifying nights. Less publicly advertised than Marriott's match, but consistently granted when politely requested.

IHG One Rewards

IHG runs an opportunistic match programme. Usually Diamond for those holding similar tiers elsewhere. Worth a try, but less reliable than the three above.

Airline matches: limited but possible

Airline status matches are much rarer than hotel matches and usually run as time-limited promotions rather than open offers. Examples that have recurred:

  • JetBlue Mosaic match from rival US carriers (useful only if you fly the East Coast often)
  • Alaska MVP match from BA Silver / Gold. Useful for West Coast US trips and oneworld linkage
  • SAS EuroBonus match from rival Star Alliance programmes, periodic
  • Etihad Guest match, sporadic but historically generous

BA Executive Club does not publicly status-match. Don't waste a polite email asking.

How to apply

  1. Take a clear screenshot of your current status, member number and recent activity in the rival programme
  2. Find the hotel chain's published status-match page (Marriott, Hyatt) or the contact form for unpublished matches (Hilton, IHG)
  3. Submit. Most respond within 7–10 working days; Marriott's portal is closer to instant
  4. Book the challenge stays. Pay attention to the qualifying nights vs. stays distinction

In short

Status matches are most valuable when you have a concrete upcoming stay or trip to put the status against. Matching to Hilton Diamond and then not staying at a Hilton in six months wastes the perk. Pair the application with a planned holiday, and the time-to-benefit is days, not years.
