Qantas Frequent Flyer: Status Tiers and Loyalty Benefits
Qantas Frequent Flyer has one of the deepest status ladders in OneWorld, with a famously unattainable top tier and a Chairman's Lounge above that which is invitation-only and whose existence Qantas declines to formally confirm. For UK flyers, the practical interest is Gold and Platinum.
The status tiers
| Tier | Status Credits (annual) | OneWorld equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| Bronze | 300 | Ruby |
| Silver | 600 | Ruby |
| Gold | 1,200 | Sapphire |
| Platinum | 2,400 | Emerald |
| Platinum One | 3,600 | Emerald (with extras) |
| Chairman's Lounge | By invitation | Emerald (top-tier) |
What each tier unlocks
Silver grants priority check-in, priority boarding and a Qantas Club lounge access voucher (occasional). Modest perks; rare for UK flyers to target this tier specifically.
Gold is the working tier: Qantas Club lounge access worldwide (and OneWorld Sapphire lounges, so BA Galleries), priority boarding, free seat selection, 50% Status Credits bonus, and increased baggage allowance.
Platinum adds OneWorld Emerald (BA First lounge and Concorde Room), four annual upgrade requests for complimentary cabin upgrades, priority baggage handling, and Qantas First lounge access.
Platinum One grants additional upgrade certificates, dedicated phone service and the ability to give Status Credits gifts to other members. Very few UK flyers ever reach this tier.
Qantas Club
Note that Qantas Club is also a paid lounge membership, separate from status. UK collectors don't typically buy Qantas Club; status delivers the same lounge benefits with flying. Gold automatically includes Qantas Club privileges.
Family and household
Qantas allows Points Pooling between family members through the "Family Transfers" feature. Status itself doesn't pool but the points do.
The quirky benefit
Qantas Platinum members get two complimentary cabin upgrades per year on eligible Qantas-marketed cash fares, plus four "upgrade request" certificates. Used well, these are some of the most valuable upgrade perks in OneWorld.
Lifetime status
Qantas Frequent Flyer offers Lifetime Silver at 7,000 lifetime Status Credits and Lifetime Gold at 14,000. Both are achievable for UK flyers who credit OneWorld partner flights to Qantas instead of Executive Club over a sustained period.
The honest take
For UK flyers who fly Qantas regularly (mostly direct LHR-PER on the 787 or onwards to Sydney), Qantas Gold is a credible target and gives broadly comparable benefits to BA Silver / Gold without the higher BA Tier Points threshold. Most UK collectors stick with BA Executive Club instead; Qantas status mostly matters for Australia-based UK expatriates and frequent Australia visitors.
