Air France/KLM Flying Blue: Status Tiers and Loyalty Benefits

Flying Blue is SkyTeam's largest loyalty programme by Western European membership and runs a five-tier status ladder topped by a Lifetime tier and an Ultimate invitation tier. For UK collectors who fly Air France or KLM via Paris or Amsterdam, Gold and Platinum are realistic targets.

The status tiers

TierXP (annual)SkyTeam equivalent

Silver100 XPElite
Gold180 XPElite Plus
Platinum300 XPElite Plus (with extras)
Platinum for Life2,400 XP (lifetime)Elite Plus permanent
UltimateBy invitationElite Plus (top tier)

What each tier unlocks

Silver grants priority check-in, priority boarding and a 50% mileage bonus.

Gold opens SkyTeam Elite Plus benefits worldwide (so KLM Crown Lounge access, Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse on transatlantic, plus Delta Sky Clubs in the US), priority everywhere, extra baggage, and a 75% mileage bonus.

Platinum adds Air France-KLM Lounge access at Paris CDG, additional baggage allowance, and guaranteed Business class seat availability with sufficient notice on Air France and KLM flights.

The Air France La Premiere angle

For Platinum holders flying Air France's First Class (La Premiere) on cash or award, the on-the-ground service includes a dedicated chauffeur transfer between airport modules at Paris CDG, a separate lounge, and a curated meal experience. Even non-Platinum La Premiere passengers get most of this, but Platinum holders get the priority.

Family and household

Flying Blue offers a Family Account allowing up to seven members to pool miles into one balance. Status doesn't pool but miles do.

The quirky benefit

Platinum for Life is achieved at 2,400 lifetime XP. Once earned, you keep Elite Plus benefits permanently. The threshold is meaningful but more attainable than the equivalent BA Lifetime Gold for comparable flying volumes.

The honest take

Flying Blue status is meaningful for UK collectors who regularly fly Air France or KLM via Paris/Amsterdam. The SkyTeam Elite Plus access opens up Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse lounges in the UK and US, which is a quietly valuable benefit since Virgin's lounges are excellent. Most UK collectors don't fly enough SkyTeam to qualify; Flying Blue is primarily a redemption currency for them.
