Qatar Airways Privilege Club: The Optimised UK Workflow

Qatar Privilege Club rebranded into the Avios family in 2023. For UK collectors that means the same Avios currency as BA Executive Club, but with a different chart and meaningfully lower carrier-imposed surcharges. Pair that with QSuite, the best mainstream Business class flying, and Qatar quietly becomes the most overlooked sensible default for long-haul Business out of Britain.

Who this is for

Anyone with a healthy BA Avios balance who flies long-haul to Asia, Africa or Oceania, anyone who values the QSuite hard product (and especially anyone travelling as a couple who wants the centre-double configuration), and anyone fed up of BA's long-haul surcharge bill.

How to build a Privilege Club Avios balance

  • Direct transfer from BA Executive Club. Free, at par, once your Privilege Club account has had at least one earning transaction. The most reliable UK earning route.
  • Amex Membership Rewards transfer. 1:1 directly to Qatar Privilege Club, usually instant. Useful if you want to keep your BA stash separate.
  • Qatar flights themselves. Credit any paid Qatar flight to Privilege Club for direct earning.
  • HSBC Premier Reward Points. Transfer at 1:1 for Premier account holders.

Award search

qatarairways.com is the primary search and is generally accurate. Premium-cabin space on the LHR-DOH route can be plentiful or hopeless depending on the date. Cross-check availability on ba.com (Qatar flights are bookable through BA Executive Club too) and on Seats.aero for cross-programme comparison.

How to book

Standard online flow at qatarairways.com using your Privilege Club account. Complex routings or stopovers sometimes need a call to Privilege Club service. Booking the same Qatar flight through BA Executive Club Avios is also possible but the chart pricing differs, so always compare.

Sweet-spot redemptions

  • LHR-DOH in QSuite Business. Around 40,000 Avios one-way Saver plus modest cash. The signature redemption.
  • LHR-BKK or LHR-SIN via Doha in QSuite. Around 80,000-100,000 Avios one-way for a two-cabin trip.
  • LHR-SYD via Doha in QSuite. Around 145,000 Avios one-way to Australia. Compare against Qantas Classic Rewards on the same Emirates routing.
  • LHR-Cape Town via Doha. One of the most efficient ways to reach Southern Africa in Business.

Common mistakes

  • Booking Qatar flights through BA Executive Club without checking Privilege Club's own price. Sometimes one chart wins, sometimes the other.
  • Forgetting that Qatar surcharges, while lower than BA, are still meaningful. Aeroplan and LifeMiles can be cheaper still for Star Alliance equivalents.
  • Missing the centre-double QSuite configuration for couples. Seat selection matters; the middle pairs convert to a genuine double bed.

The optimised workflow

  1. Open a free Privilege Club account.
  2. Generate one small earning transaction (e.g. the Qatar shopping portal) to activate the account for transfers.
  3. Identify your target long-haul Business trip 6-9 months out.
  4. Search qatarairways.com calendar. Cross-check ba.com for the same flight at the BA Avios price.
  5. Whichever chart is cheaper, transfer Avios just-in-time to that account.
  6. Book online. For couples, select centre QSuites.
  7. Pay attention to layover times in Doha; Qatar's connection minimums are generous, but flights bunch at certain times.
