Avianca LifeMiles: The Optimised UK Workflow

Avianca LifeMiles is a small Colombian airline's programme that punches comically above its weight thanks to one feature: LifeMiles does not pass carrier-imposed fuel surcharges on Star Alliance partner awards. For UK collectors that means Lufthansa, Swiss, ANA and Singapore Airlines Business cabins out of London for a cash component that's almost entirely UK Air Passenger Duty.

Who this is for

Anyone planning a long-haul Star Alliance Business or First redemption from London who wants to avoid surcharges, and anyone with an Amex Membership Rewards balance who hasn't yet considered LifeMiles as a transfer destination.

How to build a LifeMiles balance

  • Amex Membership Rewards transfer. 1:1 to LifeMiles, usually instant. The default UK earning path.
  • Buy LifeMiles in promotion. Avianca runs frequent sales pricing miles at 1.4-1.8 US cents each. Buying for a specific identified redemption is a credible strategy because the chart prices are low.
  • Avianca or Star Alliance flights. Direct earning, though most UK collectors don't fly Avianca regularly.

Award search

LifeMiles' own website is a bit slow but generally accurate for Star Alliance partners. Cross-check United's website for the same partner space; if United shows it, LifeMiles usually can book it too. Seats.aero covers LifeMiles with live data.

How to book

Online booking is the default. The website can hang on certain partner combinations, in which case the LifeMiles call centre is the fallback (chat is also available). Booking fees apply when the call centre books a routing the website would have priced; insist that you tried online first if challenged.

Sweet-spot redemptions

  • LHR-FRA-SIN in Lufthansa Business. 78,000 LifeMiles one-way plus roughly £200 cash. Compare to Lufthansa Miles & More's equivalent with several hundred pounds of surcharges.
  • LHR-MUC-HND in ANA Business. 78,000 LifeMiles one-way. ANA Business is excellent.
  • LHR-ZRH-DXB in Swiss Business. 55,000 LifeMiles, useful for Middle East routings.
  • LHR-FRA-LAX in Lufthansa First. 87,000 LifeMiles one-way for the four-suite First cabin, when availability appears.

Common mistakes

  • Transferring large Amex MR balances speculatively. LifeMiles has had quality-of-service issues in the past, and miles can be hard to recover if accounts are flagged.
  • Trying to book Lufthansa First at T-360. Lufthansa releases First space to LifeMiles much closer to departure, often T-14.
  • Forgetting the connecting cash taxes when an itinerary touches multiple high-tax airports. The LifeMiles surcharge advantage is real, but airport taxes still apply.

The optimised workflow

  1. Open a free LifeMiles account.
  2. Build an Amex MR balance via Amex Gold or Platinum.
  3. Identify the target Star Alliance trip and check LifeMiles' chart price.
  4. Confirm partner availability on United's website and Seats.aero before transferring.
  5. Transfer the exact MR needed to LifeMiles (instant).
  6. Book online. If the site hangs, switch to live chat with availability evidence to hand.
  7. Pay particular attention to layover times in Frankfurt, Munich or Zurich; tight connections at busy hubs can become problems.
