Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer: The Optimised UK Workflow
KrisFlyer is Singapore Airlines' programme and gives UK collectors a clean path to one of the world's most coveted award redemptions: Singapore Airlines Suites between London and Singapore. The earning side is straightforward thanks to a 1:1 Amex Membership Rewards transfer. The booking side rewards patience.
Who this is for
Anyone with an Amex MR balance who wants the option of SQ Suites or SQ Business, anyone planning a long-haul trip to Asia or Australia via Singapore, and Star Alliance fans looking for an alternative to Aeroplan.
How to build a KrisFlyer balance from the UK
- Amex Membership Rewards transfer. 1:1, usually instant. Hold an Amex Gold or Platinum for the meaningful earning base.
- HSBC Premier Reward Points. Also transfers to KrisFlyer at 1:1 for HSBC Premier holders.
- Singapore Airlines flights themselves. If you're already flying SQ, credit earnings to KrisFlyer.
- Buy miles in promotion. KrisFlyer periodically sells miles at ~2 US cents each. Worth running the numbers against a specific Suites target.
Award search
singaporeair.com is the only reliable search for SQ-operated awards. Suites and Business space on the LHR-SIN route opens unpredictably; persistence beats algorithm. For Star Alliance partner space, layer United's website or Seats.aero on top.
How to book
SQ-operated awards book online. Partner awards (Lufthansa, ANA, United, etc.) often need to be booked over the phone with the KrisFlyer service centre, which is responsive but sometimes slow.
Sweet-spot redemptions
- Singapore Airlines Suites LHR-SIN. About 130,000 KrisFlyer miles one-way Saver, plus modest cash. The signature redemption of the entire loyalty world.
- Singapore Airlines Business LHR-SIN. About 95,000 miles one-way Saver. More routinely available than Suites.
- Star Alliance partner Business to Tokyo or Bangkok. Around 92,000-110,000 miles via Lufthansa, ANA or Thai.
- Star Alliance partner Economy to East Coast US. 35,000 miles one-way Saver via United or Lufthansa.
Common mistakes
- Transferring Amex MR speculatively. SQ devalues KrisFlyer charts every couple of years; once miles are in KrisFlyer they're locked.
- Targeting Suites without flexibility on dates. Suites Saver space is irregular and rewards collectors who can move dates by a few days.
- Forgetting the "Advantage" tier (more miles, easier availability). Worth it only when Saver is genuinely impossible.
- Missing the expiry rule. KrisFlyer miles expire 36 months after they're earned, with no easy way to reset the clock.
The optimised workflow
- Open a free KrisFlyer account.
- Build an Amex MR balance via Amex Gold or Platinum sign-up bonuses and regular spending.
- Set up KrisFlyer alerts (or use a paid third-party alert service) for SQ Suites and Business on your target dates.
- When alerted to award space, transfer just the needed MR to KrisFlyer (usually instant).
- Book online for SQ metal, by phone for Star partner space.
- Confirm seat assignment; pay attention to which Suites configuration you're getting (centre suites are larger).
