Etihad Guest: The Optimised UK Workflow

Etihad Guest is the loyalty programme of Etihad Airways. For UK collectors it sits in an unusual sweet spot: direct UK flights from London and Manchester, low cash surcharges on redemptions, and 1:1 transfers from Amex Membership Rewards. The A380 First Apartment and the once-in-a-lifetime Residence are both bookable as awards.

Who this is for

Anyone with an Amex MR balance who wants long-haul Business with realistic cash co-pays, anyone routing to Asia, Australia or Africa via Abu Dhabi, and anyone with the means and inclination to redeem for The Residence at least once in a lifetime.

How to build an Etihad Guest balance

  • Amex Membership Rewards transfer. 1:1 to Etihad Guest, usually within 24 hours. The primary UK earning path.
  • Etihad flights themselves. Direct earning on paid Etihad bookings.
  • Buy miles in promotion. Etihad runs sales periodically; the cost-per-mile can drop to around 1.5 US cents.
  • HSBC Premier Reward Points. Transfer to Etihad Guest where the partnership applies.

Award search

etihadguest.com is the official search and works reasonably well for Etihad-operated awards. Seats.aero covers Etihad with live availability for cross-programme comparison. For partner awards (American Airlines, Air Serbia), a phone call is often required.

How to book

Etihad metal bookings work online with a logged-in Guest account. Premium-cabin redemptions can be held briefly without payment, which is useful when waiting for an MR transfer to land. Partner awards are phone-only in most cases.

Sweet-spot redemptions

  • LHR-AUH in Business. 44,000 Etihad Guest miles one-way plus roughly £150 cash. The standout direct-from-UK redemption.
  • LHR-AUH in First Apartment. 88,000 miles one-way for the A380 private suite product.
  • LHR-AUH-BKK in Business. 88,000 miles one-way to Bangkok via Abu Dhabi.
  • LHR-AUH-SYD in Business. 130,000 miles one-way for Etihad to Sydney via Abu Dhabi.
  • The Residence LHR-AUH. Around 250,000 miles one-way for the three-room private suite with butler service. Indulgent maths, but each mile redeemed at this level is worth more than 5p.

Common mistakes

  • Forgetting that Etihad Guest miles expire 18 months after the last earning or redemption activity. A single transfer resets the clock.
  • Booking the wrong configuration in First. The A380 has both First Apartments and the regular First cabin; the Apartment is the prize.
  • Missing layover sweet spots in Abu Dhabi. Etihad offers stopover hotels and free transit accommodation that can extend a redemption into a mini-break.
  • Confusing Etihad Guest with Emirates Skywards. Different airlines, different programmes, different cash bills.

The optimised workflow

  1. Open a free Etihad Guest account.
  2. Build an Amex MR balance via Amex Gold or Platinum.
  3. Identify the target trip 3-9 months out.
  4. Search etihadguest.com or Seats.aero for award space. Etihad Business space is generally available; First Apartment less so.
  5. Transfer Amex MR to Etihad Guest (24 hours).
  6. Book online. For The Residence, the website will route you to a phone call automatically.
  7. Refresh your earning activity at least once every 18 months to keep miles from expiring.
