United MileagePlus Premier: Status Tiers and Loyalty Benefits

United MileagePlus has the largest US-based frequent flyer programme by membership, and the Premier status ladder is the path into Star Alliance Gold benefits. Earning status uses Premier Qualifying Points (PQP) and Premier Qualifying Flights (PQF), which is largely about US flying.

The status tiers

TierPQP (annual)Star Alliance equivalent
Silver5,000Silver
Gold10,000Gold
Platinum15,000Gold (with extras)
1K20,000Gold (top earner)

What each tier unlocks

Silver grants priority check-in, free Economy Plus seats at check-in, and a 7% mileage bonus on United flights.

Gold opens Star Alliance Gold lounge access worldwide (United Club access on international itineraries, plus Lufthansa, Swiss, ANA, Singapore Airlines lounges), priority everything, free same-day flight changes.

1K grants Polaris Lounge access on long-haul departures (excellent at Newark and Chicago), six Plus Points upgrade credits per year, and dedicated phone service.

Global Services is invitation-only and delivers the highest tier of operational priority across the United network.

Polaris Lounge access

Polaris Lounges are United's flagship lounges at Chicago, Newark, San Francisco, LAX, IAD and Houston. They include cooked-to-order dining, premium spirits, and showers. 1K-and-above United members get access regardless of cabin; Polaris ticket holders get access from any tier.

Family and household

MileagePlus offers a Family Sharing feature where up to eight family members can pool miles. Premier status doesn't transfer between members.

The quirky benefit

United MileagePlus miles never expire, unique among major US programmes. Combined with the no-surcharge partner award chart, a long-term-held MileagePlus balance is genuinely durable.

The honest take

Premier status is hard for UK members to earn since most of the PQP earning rates favour US-paid fares. For UK collectors, MileagePlus is more useful as a redemption currency than a status programme. If you fly United transatlantic occasionally and credit those flights to MileagePlus, Silver is achievable; everything above is a US-based pursuit.
