JAL Mileage Bank: Status Tiers and Loyalty Benefits

JAL operates two parallel loyalty memberships: the standard Mileage Bank with annual status, and the lifetime JAL Global Club (JGC) which never expires once earned. UK collectors who fly JAL regularly tend to chase JGC because the lifetime promise is genuinely uncommon in modern loyalty.

The status tiers

TierFLY ON Points (annual)OneWorld equivalent
Crystal30,000Ruby
Sapphire50,000Sapphire
Diamond100,000Emerald
Premier (JGC) Lifetime, after SapphireSapphire (for life)

What each tier unlocks

Crystal grants priority check-in, additional baggage and modest priority boarding.

Sapphire unlocks Sakura Lounge access worldwide (and OneWorld Sapphire access, so BA Galleries), priority boarding, fast-track security at Japanese airports and a 35% FLY ON bonus.

Diamond adds JAL First Class lounge access, priority phone service, OneWorld Emerald (so BA Concorde Room access), and three upgrade vouchers per year.

JAL Global Club

JGC is the prized feature. Earn Sapphire once, sign up for the JGC card within the eligibility window, and you keep Sakura Lounge access and OneWorld Sapphire benefits for the rest of your life, regardless of future flying activity. UK members earn JGC the hard way (50,000 FLY ON Points in a year, all on JAL or JAL-credited partner flights) and then never have to chase status again.

Lounge access in detail

Tokyo Haneda and Narita both have multiple JAL lounges. The Sakura Lounge at Haneda has a famous sushi bar. The First Class Lounge at Haneda includes the dedicated dining room with cooked-to-order kitchen. Diamond opens everything.

Family and household

JAL does not offer a Household Account equivalent. JAL miles can be transferred between family members for a fee but not pooled freely.

The quirky benefit

JGC lifetime membership is genuinely lifetime. For UK collectors who can put together one year of intensive JAL flying (typically a year of regular Japan business travel), the resulting OneWorld Sapphire benefits last decades. No other OneWorld carrier offers this on terms this generous.

The honest take

Annual JAL status is hard to earn from the UK unless you live in Japan or fly there often for work. JGC, however, is a worthwhile goal for anyone planning sustained Japan engagement; once earned, you have permanent BA Galleries access whenever you fly OneWorld, which materially affects the value of every BA, Iberia or Cathay paid flight you take afterwards.
