Sweet-Spot European Hotel Redemptions on Points
Hotel points are commonly redeemed at 0.3–0.5p each; not bad, but not great. The sweet-spot redemptions are the properties where the points price hasn't kept up with the cash price, leaving cents-per-point well over 0.7p and occasionally over 1p. These are the European properties UK collectors should aim a points stash at.
Hilton Honors sweet spots
- Conrad Algarve, Portugal — coastal luxury for around 60,000–80,000 points/night against summer cash rates of £450+. Free breakfast for Hilton Gold.
- Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh (The Caledonian), ~70,000–100,000 points/night, frequently below cash on prime weekends.
- Conrad St James, London — ~70,000 points off-season; over 0.6p per point in central London.
- Hilton Imperial Dubrovnik; old town views for 50,000–70,000 points/night vs. cash that can double in season.
For all Hilton stays of 5+ nights, the fifth-night-free rule applies to award bookings.
Marriott Bonvoy sweet spots
- St. Regis Venice; iconic Grand Canal location; 80,000–110,000 points/night against cash frequently in the £700+ range.
- Le Méridien Limassol, Cyprus, family-friendly resort, 25,000–40,000 points/night off-peak. Easy 0.8p+ per point.
- Autograph Collection properties in the Cotswolds and Scottish Highlands — 30,000–50,000 points/night for characterful country-house hotels.
- St. Regis Rome / Westin Excelsior Rome — both regularly under the cash-rate-per-point threshold of 0.7p in shoulder season.
Marriott's Free Night Award (35,000 points cap) from the UK Bonvoy Amex card can be exceptionally good value at any of these properties.
World of Hyatt sweet spots
Hyatt's footprint in Europe is small but the pricing is generous. Notable for UK travellers:
- Park Hyatt Vienna, 30,000 points/night against cash of £500+ at weekends. The defining Hyatt European sweet spot.
- Park Hyatt Paris-Vendôme — 45,000 points/night, against cash that can hit £1,000+.
- Andaz Amsterdam Prinsengracht. 25,000 points/night in a converted central canal-house library.
- Park Hyatt Zurich and Hotel Martinez (Unbound Collection) Cannes — both reliably under 35,000 points.
Hyatt points are harder to earn from the UK (no UK-issued Hyatt credit card), but Amex MR transfers at 1:1 to the partner programme work in many cases via secondary partners.
IHG One Rewards sweet spots
- InterContinental Amstel, Amsterdam; a classic European points sweet spot. 70,000–100,000 points/night against cash that can exceed £600.
- Six Senses Ibiza — high points price (~120,000+), but cash rates in season run £1,500+ per night.
- Regent Berlin and InterContinental Vienna — consistent value for capital-city weekends.
How to find your own sweet spots
The simple test: for any property you might book on points, divide the cash rate (incl. taxes) by the points price. Anything over 0.7p per point for Hilton, IHG or Marriott is solid; over 1.5p per point for Hyatt is the bar for an exceptional redemption. Below those thresholds, pay cash and save the points for somewhere better.
