Amex Membership Rewards: The UK Collector's Guide
American Express Membership Rewards ("MR") is the most flexible loyalty currency available in the UK. Unlike Avios, which commits you to BA's award chart. MR lets you transfer to whichever airline or hotel programme makes sense at the moment you book. For serious British collectors, an MR-earning Amex card sits alongside a BA or Virgin Atlantic card, not instead of it.
Which UK cards earn MR?
- Amex Preferred Rewards Gold, 1 MR per £1, sign-up bonus typically 30,000 MR for £3,000 spend in 3 months. £195/year (free first year)
- Amex Platinum. 1 MR per £1 with a substantial sign-up bonus. £650/year
- Amex Rewards Credit Card, free, earns 1 MR per £1
- Amex Business Gold and Platinum. For sole traders and limited companies; bonus structures vary
Note that the BA Amex cards (Premium Plus and free Blue) earn Avios directly, not MR. They're separate ecosystems.
The transfer partners
| Partner | Ratio (MR : Partner) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| British Airways (Avios) | 1 : 1 | The default destination for most UK transfers |
| Iberia Plus (Avios) | 1 : 1 | Useful for the Madrid transatlantic trick |
| Aer Lingus AerClub (Avios) | 1 : 1 | For low-surcharge transatlantic |
| Virgin Atlantic Flying Club | 1 : 1 | For Upper Class with Companion Voucher |
| Singapore KrisFlyer | 1 : 1 | Star Alliance partner redemptions |
| Cathay Asia Miles | 1 : 1 | OneWorld; great for Cathay First |
| Etihad Guest | 1 : 1 | The Residence, anyone? |
| Emirates Skywards | 1 : 1 | Burdened by Emirates' high cash co-pay |
| Air France/KLM Flying Blue | 1 : 1 | Useful as floor-priced partner |
| Hilton Honors | 1 : 1.5 | Marginal. Usually buy points instead |
| Marriott Bonvoy | 3 : 2 | Poor ratio; use only to top up a near-complete redemption |
When to transfer (and when to wait)
The cardinal rule: transfer only when you have a specific redemption in mind. Once MR points leave your Amex account, they're locked into the partner programme, no transfers back, no recoveries on devaluations.
Two situations where transferring is the right call:
- You've identified award space and need to complete a booking right now
- A bonus-transfer promotion (e.g. "30% bonus to BA Avios") is running and you have a near-term planned redemption
If neither applies, hold the points in MR and let optionality compound.
Transfer speed
Avios (BA, Iberia, AerClub), Virgin Points and KrisFlyer transfers are instant. Asia Miles, Etihad and Flying Blue typically take 24–48 hours. Hotel transfers can take several days. Plan availability searches around transfer time — award space won't wait for you.
The 24-month rule
Amex UK awards sign-up bonuses only if you haven't held any Personal Amex card from the same "family" in the previous 24 months. Business Amex cards are a separate family. Plan applications a couple of years ahead if you intend to recycle sign-up bonuses.
